Ronald White
of Ellsworth, Minnesota
Blue Mound Woodcarvers, Inc.

Ron White served in the United States Army from 1957 to 1959. He was then in the United States Navy from 1960 until his honorable discharge in 1964. Ron and his wife were married on January 13, 1962 while he serving in the United States Navy, in San Diego, California.

The Whites have two daughters. Julie works as a records clerk at the Nobles County Law Enforcement Center in Worthington, and Lorrie works at Sather's Cookie and Candy Company in Round Lake. They have also been blessed with two grandsons, two granddaughters and a great-grandson.

Ron worked for the United States Postal Service as Postmaster in Worthington for 26 years and for 12 more at Round Lake. By only taking six sick days in all that time he was able to retire one and a-half years early.

Ron has enjoyed doing oil paintings since he was 17 years old. He also enjoys his other hobby of making birdhouses and bird feeders of all types.

His woodcarving hobby (or was it a business?) started at age 13 when he carved two dozen duck decoy heads for a neighbor for fifty cents each. Ron has enjoyed woodcarving ever since, except for when he was in the military.

Several years ago Ron staffed a carving club in Worthington, but the club disbanded after two or three years due to lack of members. After checking out several other carving clubs, Ron decided to join the Blue Mound Woodcarvers in Luverne. His decision was based on similar carving interests and the great fellowship of the Blue Mound club members.

Ron is a self-taught wood carver who learned the art by reading and putting into practice the different techniques he learned. It is said that "you learn from your mistakes," and Ron says "I've made plenty." He not only learned from his mistakes, but he has excelled in the art of woodcarving.

He does all types of carving, but prefers to do realistic carving with great attention to detail. Ron's favorite carvings are loons, ducks, small animals, and face carvings on logs used in the gardens and landscaping of his yard. His all-time favorite carving is a full-size male woodduck.

Ron taught woodcarving classes for four years through the community education program in Worthington and is also active in teaching at our beginning classes every February.
