Lars is experienced with the saw (not the powered kind either) and is well respected in the trade and forest. Lee's carvings are realistic with a Scandinavian twist. Lars can also be done in the true flat-plane style of carving. Lee enjoys carving faces and making the expressions match the feeling that he is trying to put forth in the carving. Lee started his carving with a Community Education class in Maple Grove, MN in 1993. His next instructor was the well known Harley Refsal of Decorah, Iowa, who taught him the flexibility of the Scandinavian style of carving. The Scandinavian designs are related to the regional rosemaling designs. Charles has been carving for a total of 27 years, with the last 17 years doing primarily Acanthus. He has experimented with many styles of carving but loves Acanthus the most. Charles has received a Vesterheim Gold Medal in Acanthus carving. These whimsy houses may include miniature doors that actually open and close! Finishing materials will be furnished if time permits. Karen started carving by taking the MWCA class in Coon Rapids nine years ago. Since then Karen has taken many more classes in a variety of carving styles. Karen has assisted in teaching the MWCA Beginner Class for the past six years. Karen says, “I don't do realistic carvings. I love anything silly that makes me smile as I carve.” Her favorites include caricatures and Santas. Cost of bark pieces is $2.00 to $4.00 each. All skill levels. Basic carving tools. (Bark will dull your tools, so be sure to bring a strop.) G. Semi-realistic Canvasback Duck Wes Spadgenske Andover, MN The semi-realistic Canvasback duck will be about 1/3 the size of an actual Canvasback, and in the floating position. The body and head will be carved separately, then glued together. Blanks will be cut from choice butternut carving stock. We will insert glass eyes to really make it come to life. Detailing will be done with a knife or palm tools – no power carving or wood burning. The Canvasback will be given a clear finish to show off the natural beauty of the wood. This class is intended to be a fun learning experience. Wes has been carving for about 23 years, and has taught “fan-bird” carving and beginner classes for about nine years. Wes says, “I do all types of carving, as I haven't figured out what I want to be when I grow up.” Cost of butternut blank, eyes and other materials is $12.00 Skill level: Anyone who has completed a beginner class or equivalent. Tools needed: Sharp knife and palm tools (small V-tool and gouges). H. Mrs. Old World Santa Russell Scott St. Paul, MN Capturing a wry expression on a Santa's face or the reverent air in an angel carving is one of Russell Scott's specialties. If you carved last year's Old World Santa, or even if you didn't, here is a chance to carve a simple female character. You can pair her up with an Old World Santa or show her off as an individual carving. This project will be from a basswood cutout, 2 1/4 inches square by about 6 ½ inches tall. Russ will have several variations for you to choose from. This project may be finished and/or painted in class. Russell has been carving for nine years and has been teaching beginning wood carving for the past four years. Russ favors carving the human figure, mostly caricature but also some realistically. Wood carving is a natural extension of his love of the forest. Russ became interested in carving as the result of a community education class. From the start he was hooked on the magic of watching figures emerge and take on life from blocks of wood. Blanks will cost $10.00 each. SHARP tools are needed – bench knife, assortment of palm tools, including V-tool and gouges. Skill level is intermediate.I. Caricatures Don Fischer Cottonwood, MN Students will have a choice of caricatures in this class to carve from “roughed-out” basswood blanks that leave plenty of wood for individual expression and detail. Ole and Lena are based on a husband and wife team that dress up and do performances. Their blanks are 10 inches tall and can be carved with them dressed in their 'Sunday Best' or 'Ready for the next big snowstorm.' Or you can carve a Snow Man or Snow Woman, a pair that you could only have dreamed of making when you were a child. They make a cute display all winter long and are 8 inches tall. Emphasis in this class is on detail. Don has been carving for over 15 years and has been teaching for over 3 years. His favorite type of carving is caricatures, of course. Don says, “Wood carving should be fun, not frustrating. I try to help the student have fun and create something they can be proud of.” Cost of rough outs is $15 to $20 each. Tools needed: Your favorite tools; carving knife, medium gouges or palm gouges, carving glove, your strop and sharpener. Skill level: Advanced beginner to intermediate. J. Bottle Stopper Heads Dick Skauge Lake Park, MN These in-the-round carvings can be carved as caricatures or realistically. The plan for this class is to complete a detailed head on Saturday and paint on Sunday early, then start carving on a second head. This helps the learning process. The basic basswood cut-out we will use is 4 3/4” high, about 3” deep and close to 2” wide. It is a male with a baseball style cap. He can be carved with or without the cap, the cap can be changed, he can be carved with lots of hair or no hair, he has a clean face so we can carve eyes, nose and mouth. For realistic face bring pictures. There will be other cut-outs to choose from also. Dick became interested in carving 28 years ago while living in Fargo, ND. In 1985 the Skauge family moved to Lake Park, MN. In 1987, Dick became one of the founding fathers of the Lake Country Carving Club in Detroit Lakes, MN. Dick enjoys teaching all levels of carving and continues to take classes himself. Learning new techniques from other carvers helps him to be a better carver and a better instructor. Dick has taught numerous classes in the mid-west and will become an international instructor this year when he teaches in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Cost of blanks is $4 each or three cut-out heads for $10.00. Tools needed: This is a hand held project using hand tools. No power, please! Dick will bring the paint and paint brushes for use in class. K. Spoons & Spirits Chris Whillock Faribault, MN This class will be divided into two, one day classes. The first will be Spoon Carving and the second a Spirit Face in cottonwood bark. In the Spoon Carving class you can pick from a large selection of spoon blanks/patterns. The projects have various degrees of difficulty so any level carver should find something challenging. There will be some painting instruction. The second day we will have fun carving Spirit faces. Using a knife and a few simple palm tools to create a small spirit face in bark. Learn placement of the eyes, nose and mouth and different techniques for carving the hair and beard. You should be able to carve more than one project in each of these classes. Also, it is possible to focus on only one of these projects for both days. Chris has been woodcarving all of his life. Chris says, “I have had the privilege of growing up around my father, Ivan, and Marv Kaisersatt – my two favorite carvers.” Chris loves to try all types of carving but has found himself doing relief and wood spirits most recently. He is a regular contributor to Carving Magazine and is running a carving tool and supply business called WoodcarversWarehouse.com. Chris has been teaching for a number of years, quite often on the road for various woodworking and woodcarving shows. Cost of blanks is $5.00 to $15.00. Tools needed: Glove, knife and assorted palm tools. Skill level: Any L. Relief Carving Alice Spadgenske Crystal, MN Choice of class projects in the shallow relief style of carving will include scenes of a garden gnome, country outhouse, weathered barn, rose or sunflowers done on an 8 1/2” X 11” X 1” board; and cut-out blanks of Santa, Cowboy Santa, Elf, Cowgirl or Victorian girl. All projects will be in basswood. Alice has been carving a variety of subjects in various styles for the past 17 years and had taught numerous classes to carvers that are just beginning or have years of carving experience.
